An artists book is a medium of artistic expression that uses the form or function of 'book' as inspiration." Smithsonian Libraries
Artists books are often small worlds of experience, information and exploration. They are inextricably about the process of viewing and exploring the book, a complete sensory experience.
I create artists books in response to political, environmental and social issues. I record descriptive words, ideas and drawings. After considerable research, reading, museum visits and online videos, I conceive of a book, seeing it in my mind as a finished artwork. Often I have to learn new crafts, mediums, techniques and styles to make them become a reality.
For example, for a book cover about the poet and writer Eileen Myles, I learned quilting which consists of men's flannel shirts from Goodwill, her typical wardrobe choice. For Catherine Opie, I taught myself basic leather work and knotting as she first found community in the LA lesbian leather scene.
I strive to get your attention intellectually, visually and emotionally. I create experiences which illuminate, stimulate and entertain.
